CAT BEHAVIOUR PROBLEMS

Cats are Britain’s most popular pet and most have happy, contented lives. There are some, however, who struggle to meet the criteria of popular pet: do you recognise any of these?

House soiling cats

• Spraying or marking indoors
• Your cat seems to have forgotten what a litter tray is for

Aggressive cats

• When your cats see each other is there a confrontation along the lines of the gunfight at the OK Corral?
• Is your cat a Jekyll and Hyde character, sometimes cuddly and other times a bit of a monster?

Fearful cats

• Does your cat cower in the corner when particular people appear?
• Do you think your cat might be agoraphobic?
• Do your cats seem terrified of each other?

Miscellaneous

• Excessive licking and grooming
• Sucking and/or chewing wool, fabric, rubber

Many cat owners think that there is no treatment for cat behaviour problems, other than rehoming or even euthanasia. However, there is a much greater understanding now about the nature and behaviour of the domestic cat and in many cases fairly simple changes can make a world of difference to you and your cat.
